Once a small fishing town surrounded by orange and banana groves, Alanya is now an extensive holiday center with wide beaches, modern hotels, restaurants, cafes, and bars. At distance of 135 km east of Antalya, Alanya's 70 km of beaches are sheltered by the Toros Mountains. Given its name by the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad the First, Alanya's history stretches back four thousand years. In the ancient days going by the name of Korekesion, the town was known in Byzantine times as Kolonoros, meaning "beautiful mountain." The town's earliest settlement was on the steep peninsula behind the harbor. In 1225, the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad built the impressive castle walls on the remains ofa Roman fort. The 33 m high octagonal "Red Tower," symbol ofAlanya, is now used as an ethnography museum. The tower stands as an open museum ofthe architectural styles of the Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman Empires.
